Early Autumn Storm

Midnight lightning -
from windowsill to my pillow
the youngest cat carries
the scent of rosemary.

Unconvinced

Somewhere outside a cornered skunk convinces the purple air:
Scarved insurgents burning tires at a checkpoint before dawn
or so the open window elaborates, telegraphing the backyard's
black velvet pastoral.
One of the cats gnaws gently through
the tangled surge protector
, twitching singed behind the curtains
the fire detector dreams, always an alarmist. My pillow whispers:
Everything is lost, shivering drop-jawed naked in your driveway
20 full minutes before the first siren unspools its doppler tongue.
Gravel mumbles beneath bare feet, damp, biting in. Someone's
trapped inside. Tell him to come out. Why won't he believe us?
