Hobble Creek Review
Nancy L. Savery
Bill

He made the successful leap
from Kansan to Nebraskan,
ever the loyal Midwesterner,
reminding us to consider cottonwoods,
ponds,  bluestem, rivers and sunflowers.

He has been central to our lives
all these years:
teacher, poet, mentor,
gentle critic, lover of history
with a sparkle in the eye
to accompany a clever tongue-in-cheek
or turn of phrase.

The steady baritone voice flowed so resonantly
it was immediately recognizable,
and we knew there was a splendid story to follow.

He urged us to acknowledge the lives we live
but to not regard matters too seriously,
to keep an eye on the end
in his own noble metaphors and words.

And we remember him simply
as “Bill.”
