WHAT HAVE I LEARNED

That I ought to know better
old as I am. To avoid
the Manhole of Self-Pity,
the Roadblock of Criticizing
One’s Mate.  I ought by now
to have mastered the Mountain
of Acceptance and learned to
recite the Tale of Pollyanna.

At any rate, I should have
learned how to
make a smile
be my umbrella
on a rainy,
rainy day.  What have I learned?
To
try, try again.
Barbara Schmitz has published two full length poetry
collections, How to get out of the Body (Sandhills), and How Much
Our Dancing Has Improved (Backwaters), which won the 2005
Nebraska Center for the Books Poetry Award.  Her most
recent book is What Bob Says, from Pudding House in 2010.
She taught writing and literature at Norteast College for 30
years, coordinating the Visiting Writers Series there.
